(SPOILER WARNING!!! This article does contain spoilers, if you haven’t seen the movie, just see the first paragraph to be informed without spoilers!!!)

Horrible Bosses 2 had its moments, but it wasn’t as smart and hilarious as the first movie, and that is unfortunate. Rating: 3 out 5 Stars.

I’m going to kill three birds with one stone. Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis are bringing some good comedy in the big screen right now. All of them gain big success with their comedy on TV with Bateman in Arrested Development, Charlie Day in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Jason Sudeikis in Saturday Night Live. Each of them has their own style as well, Bateman as the calm, worried guy, his eyes do show some comedic anger or sadness, Day is the high spirited dumb guy with a voice that will be in comedy lore, and Sudeikis with the funny one liners and name calling and his cool persona vibe he gives out. This trio made a real good comedy in Horrible Bosses that was actually smart and funny. It showed that these three guys actually had comedic chemistry and balancing their comedic talents perfectly. I knew this movie will at least become a cult classic, and it was. Now that they made a sequel with a story that could work, I was all in for another classic. I wasn’t expecting it to be better, but just as good. I guess my expectations were too high. I will start with what I like, to the so so, to what I didn’t like.

What I like, the story of this movie wasn’t bad. Yeah it may conflict with the title “Horrible Bosses,” but it is a story that works for a sequel to this comedy. Instead of murdering, they decide to go with a kidnapping of a son of a corporate billionaire that screwed them over on a business deal for their patent. (By the way, the patent of a shower with shampoo coming out of the shower head is a great idea.) I just like the idea of the trio of Nick Hendricks, Kirk Buckman, and Dale Arbus, played by Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis, going against evil corporate people. It does give se good political undertones of corporate America which I agree with. One new actor in particular I liked in the movie is Jonathan Banks, whom you might remember him as Mike Erhmantraut in Breaking Bad, playing Detective Hatcher who is on the kidnapping case. Banks pretty much played like Mike from Breaking Bad only as a cop, and I loved every minute of him playing that role. (Can’t wait for Better Call Saul.)

The so so, for a comedy it had its moments but it wasn’t as funny as the first movie. It was little things that made it funny, like the middle seat, the Dora the Explorer wallow talkie, the small Halloween masks. Things like that that don’t make too much sense but it was funny how they incorporated to the movie. Probably the funniest moment was the beginning where they were at a TV show promoting their patent. So many moments that were crudely hilarious that I couldn’t help but laugh. Especially with Keegan-Michael Key playing one of the TV hosts named Mike. (Btw, if you haven’t watched Key and Peele yet, you need to watch it, you won’t be disappointed.) Especially the name of their website nickkirkdale.com. (If you seen the movie, you would understand, if not, just read it out loud). The new villains of the movie were a father and son corporate billionaires named Burt and Rex Hanson, played by Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine. I will start with Rex who really played a douche. He decided to get himself kidnapped so he can get $5 million from his dad, and screw the guys over in the process. He didn’t care about anybody but himself which even leads to killing his own father, and very not likable for a villain that got what he deserves in the end and it was cool for the sake of the story. Not my personal favorite role of Chris Pine, and it should be thrown away and be forgotten. Christoph Waltz is another greedy corporate basterd who screws the trio over in making 100,000 of their product and deciding not buy it after all. A jerk move that started the kidnapping story to begin with. He was cunning as usual when it comes to Waltz acting. However, there was not enough of him, but even with that small amount of time, he wasn’t likable either, loving his money more than his own son. (The apple doesn’t roll far from the tree.) They did bring some characters back for this movie. Jennifer Anistan reprised her role as Dr. Julia Harris, the sex crazed person still trying to bang Dale. Even after going through sex addiction therapy, she’s still the same. They also brought in Kevin Spacey reprising his role as Favid Harken. A semi-cameo role that was not needed other than to see Kevin Spacey’s character act like a jerk, but hey, it’s Kevin Spacey. Lastly, Jaime Foxx reprised his role as (excuse my language) Motherfucker Jones. The crew comes back for his consulting for kidnapping, but in the end, he wanted the money to open a Pinkberry. (Let that sink in, and tell me that is not funny.) Overall, you get the same characters just for the reminiscing laughs. Maybe too much reminiscing laughs.

What I didn’t like, the trio did continue to have good chemistry with each other, but there was a little too much fussing and jargon. I swear almost the whole movie is like this: “That’s a great idea.” “No its not, it will not work for (whatever reason).” “He has a valid point.” “Yeah, but it would be awesome.” Too much of that dialogue going on which got old real quick. Also, I was confused with the money part during the exchange, it seemed like the money was still in the bag with the tracker in it. So how did (excuse my language) Motherfucker Jones got away scotch free, or even Rex when they found him supposedly kidnapped and strapped to a chair. Maybe I missed something. Also I wasn’t too fond of the Katy Perry song “Roar,” but after this movie, I really dislike that song. Lastly, the way the whole turn of events happened in this movie, leading for the trio to continue their business was too forced, and not smartly written like in the first movie. It actually disappointed me, cuz the intelligent writing in the first movie made this movie really good.

Overall, even though the movie wasn’t as funny or smartly written as the first one, the solid story and the laugh moments made it watchable at least. However, it is nothing to be obsessed over. As they say, “the original is priceless!!!” Final Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.
