Mob films is a genre I always loved. When you think of classics, you think of many mob films like The Godfather, Goodfellas, and The Departed. Some of the best characters and dialogues are from the classic mob films. They always try to reinvent the wheel with these type of films to make it more unique, but I believe they can make them typical as long the dialogue and violence is very unique. Why I believe director Quinton Tarantino should do a mob movie, he would make a classic for sure. For now, I have to see Ben Affleck not only in a mob film, but directing it as well. I have to support my Boston boy, so I had to check it out.

What I Like: The acting was superb. Every person played their role well. Especially, Ben Affleck as Joe Coughlin. I liked how he was cool, calm, and collected and yet, very menacing. He was also very intelligent, but I hated his weakness of women which lead him to bad decisions. However, it is what made the story flow better and make it more interesting. I just love the moments where Joe had his back against the wall, but he always had something up his sleeve. To me that is amazing. I also liked how he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, and do the dirty work himself to prove that he isn’t a typical shot caller. I loved the chemistry between Joe and his partner Dion, played by Chris Messina. Dion provided a lot of the comic relief that really lightens the moments, and made it more enjoyable.

The So So: It is a typical mob film, but as I said before, what else can they do? It has its cliches, but it is the cliches that I enjoy watching. Just love seeing, the main character talking to the guy, and then ends up shooting him after he proves his point. These moments always get to me, and show how serious the character can be. With that said, the twists were typical as well, and it wasn’t that surprising to see when the twists happen. I expected it to happen sooner or later.

What I Didn’t Like: The dialogue had to be some of the most boring dialogue I ever heard. During the epic moments it was cool, but all the transitional moments were very dull. It got to a point where i’m like, ok, get to the point. It really did lag so much which really affected how I enjoyed this film. It’s too bad, because it really did had its cool moments, but you almost fall asleep to get to those moments.

Overall: It is a typical mob film with some cool moments, but for the most parts, it was pretty boring. Probably the weakest for Ben Affleck’s directing, but it wasn’t horrific. I just wish it brought more to the table.
