This is my own award show called The Real Awards (formally known as The ill Awards). This is where I make my categories and present the winners for the year of 2016. Is it better than the Oscars, probably not, better than MTV Movies Awards, maybe, but this is just my opinions for each award. Feel free to comment whether you agree or disagree. Now without further ado, let’s start with the first category:

Funniest Movie of the Year

Deadpool_poster

Deadpool

It is a comic book action film, but the hilarity in this was superb. I was laughing from beginning to end with all the antics and quotes. Ryan Reynolds mixed the comedic role and superhero (maybe antihero) role very well, and created a character we will always remember and laugh about in future years!!!

Best Animated Movie of the Year

Kubo_and_the_Two_Strings_poster

Kubo and the Two Strings

I’ve said this many times before, but this animated film was the best stop motion action I have ever seen. The special effects has blown me away. Let alone, the story with all the Japanese culture and legendary characters made it very enjoyable and fun to watch for the whole family. It has been two years in a row that an animated movie made it to my Best Movie of the Year, and I really think that is a great thing, because it involves the whole family. That is what what animated movies are all about!!!

Best Nerd/Fanboy Movie of the Year

Captain_America_Civil_War_poster

Captain America: Civil War

Before this film came out I was a big fan of the story in the comics. When I heard that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) were doing a movie based on this comic series, I didn’t think it was possible. There were too many character stories that would be too much for a two hour movie. Not only did the film proved me wrong and made an awesome comic book movie with some great writing for the story that really made it their own, they also introduced new characters for us to get excited about in the near future (Black Panther and Spider-Man). It just proves that the MCU still remains supreme in the comic book movie world, and will probably continue in years to come!!!

Best Romantic Movie of the Year

loving_2016_film

Loving

Usually romantic films are cheesy and eye rolling, but this one was not only different, but very powerful. The fact about interracial marriage and the politics that came in the 50’s really hit close to home for me. It’s amazing to see how much stuff the Loving family had to go through to just live a peaceful life with their family. Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton provided some great acting and chemistry to make it impactful. I’m surprised this film didn’t get an Oscar nomination!!!

Best Oscar Nominated Movie of the Year

hacksaw_ridge_poster

Hacksaw Ridge

There has been a trend for me of picking my favorite in this category, and having it not winning the Oscar for Best Picture. It just shows how real I am when it comes to films, and give it a different and probably a relatable perspective on films in general. With Hacksaw Ridge, the best war film action since Saving Private Ryan that had a great and unique story. Great acting and direction really made this for me one of the most memorable of 2016!!!

Movie That Exceeded My Expectations in 2016

everybody_wants_some_poster

Everybody Want Some!!

If you hadn’t seen this comedy, do yourself a favor and check it out. It has a comedic vibe and story that reminded me of Animal House. Throughout the film I was laughing at their conversations, quotes, and antics each different character brings. I also appreciated the realness this film brings, and with the unique setting go college life in the early 80’s. I did not expected for this comedy to be really good, but I enjoy being pleasantly surprised!!!

Most Disappointing Movie of 2016

Batman_v_Superman_poster

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

I know some people will tell me, “I told you so.” (Whatever!!!) I really did have high hopes that this film will not only be good, but give the MCU some friendly competition. Reason I would think that is because I really enjoyed Man of Steel. However, it really was a mess that a part of me knew it was coming, but didn’t want to believe it. I don’t blame the acting (Batfleck was good after all the hate) or action, I blame the writing and lack of transitional editing. It just showed that the DC Extended Universe were really desperate to compete with the MCU by putting everything in it which really made it all a clunky mess. I took some heat of giving it a merciful rating, but Captain America: Civil War made me change my mind. (However, the Director’s Cut made me feel better about my rating.) DC really needs to step their game up if they really want to come close to compete with the MCU because they reign supreme in the comic book movie world!!!

Movie Everybody Liked but I Didn’t in 2016

Neighbors_2_Sorority_Rising

Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising

I really enjoyed the first film which was funny and unique. However, I didn’t like this sequel. I thought the story was too bland, and the comedy really was too much slapstick and raunchiness for my liking. Many people told me that they really liked this film including many other critics that I read. I just don’t see why to be quite honest, but it is what it is!!!

Movie Everybody Hated, but I Liked in 2016

Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_Out_of_the_Shadows_poster

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

I took some heat for liking the first one, and I took some heat for liking this one, but honestly I do find these films enjoyable. As a matter of fact, it did critically better than its predecessor, though not by much. I am a fan of this whole franchise, and maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much. I believe people need to understand that these films are made for kids to really enjoy. It is not going to be dark like the DC Extended Universe films, and it is not going to be thought provoking as the MCU. It is just pure entertainment, and in that regard, it did its job. I do believe all that hate extends to Michael Bay, and sometimes his hate can be unmerited (Just my opinion)!!!

Weirdest Movie of 2016

Swiss_Army_Man_poster

Swiss Army Man

I didn’t have to think long and hard for this category. This movie was just plain out weird. I mean I get the hidden message, but the way they go about things involving a dead guy was just too much to bare for me. You have to see it to know what I mean, but to give you a quick example the guy uses the dead body’s farts to propel him to the water to get to from one island to another. That is just the tip of the iceberg in the weirdness!!!

Creepiest Movie of 2016

conjuring_2

The Conjuring 2

This has been a pretty good year critically for horror films. I’m usually don’t watch horror films for many of my own reasons, but I do give the critically good ones a chance. I believe the reason these horror films worked this year is because they stepped up their creepiness. For The Conjuring 2, they really stepped up their creepiness from the first film. That nun was really creepy looking, and some of the scenes dealing with demon possessions really made me creep out a little. I just hope in 2017 won’t be as good for horror as in 2016, because it can be too much for me!!!

Movie I Refused to Watch in 2016

The_Shallows_poster

The Shallows

A very rare category for me, but now it has happened two years in a row. (Is something wrong with me?) Well one thing that will do it for me is adding sharks as the main part of the film makes me not one to see it. Plain and simple, sharks give me the creeps, and don’t want anything to do with them. You can blame the movie Jaws for that!!!

Movie With the Best Soundtrack

moana_teaser_poster

Moana

Still to this day I am humming the music to this film. The best soundtrack I heard since probably The Lion King. The music really made this film fun and enjoyable. Songs like the Oscar nominated song, “How Far I’ll Go,” and “You’re Welcome,” which is actually sung by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson himself. I give credit to Lin-Manuel Miranda for writing these songs, and the future is bright for him!!!

Movie with the Best Quote of 2016

hacksaw_ridge_poster

Hacksaw Ridge

The quote is by Private Desmond Doss, played by Andrew Garfield, which is “Please Lord, help me get one more.” The reason I loved that quote so much is because it just showed the true character of Private Doss. He refused to hold a gun to kill, but instead he goes out to the battle field and saving many of these wounded soldiers lives. Overtime he says that prayer and goes out all night saving these soldiers lives one by one by himself, shows his true dedication in being a great soldier. That moment is what made this film so great in my book, and teach you about not only standing up in what you believe in, but proving the naysayers wrong!!!

Movie with the Most WTH Moment

fi

The Brothers Grimsby

You have to see it, but to not give too much away, it involves elephants. That scene not only made me say, “What the heck,” it had my mouth wide open in astonishment, and at times closing my eyes and shaking my head. It was so radical an unique, I couldn’t help but being grossly astonished and amused at the same time!!!

Well, those were my winners of The Real Awards. I hope you all enjoyed them. Please feel free to comment on anything. Let’s see what 2017 holds for us, but below is my full rankings of the films of 2017 for your reading pleasures. Thanks for reading!!!
