What’s up everybody, you’re real movie critic is here, and the day is finally here where I can finally give you My Long Overdue Top 10 Movies of 2017. It is May so it is way overdue, but as my past readers know, the reason it is overdue is cuz that’s when I finish watching almost all the films of 2017. For that year there has been a lot of great movies, and still some of them didn’t make the top 10 list (Sorry Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle). So this year’s list has been quite difficult for me. So whose ready for this list? I know I am so let’s get things started (There are SPOILERS for some of these films):
10)
Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Real Rating: 4.5 Stars)
This will most likely be my most controversial movie that is on this list. A lot of “fanboys” really hate this movie. As for me where I am a casual Star Wars fan I thought it was great. I loved the risks it took, and I think it is a great bridge to move on from the past and look forward to the future. That battle scene with Rey and Kylo Ren fighting off the red guards was pure awesome. I also thought it was a proper send off for the character of Luke Skywalker. I think the hatred is from two things spoiled fans who can’t let go of the past, or fans who made so many theories and it didn’t go through. I say for the people who really did enjoy it, brush off the haters and like for what it is, a Space Opera.
9)
Thor: Ragnarok (Real Rating 4.5 Stars)
I always gave the first two Thor movies the benefit of the doubt. It had many people say that it is hard to make a movie about the Marvel comic book hero, The Mighty Thor. With all that said, this Thor movie proved that there can be a really enjoyable Thor film. I give a lot of credit to director Taika Waititi for creating a funny, yet epic movie about the fall of Asgard. That soundtrack was amazing. It also includes one of my favorite fight scenes between Thor and Hulk. Lastly, the chemistry between Thor and Loki has always impressed me with every movie they are together, that dynamic will always hold near and dear to me with some great character development and story telling.
8)
Logan Lucky (Real Rating 4.5 Stars)
This was one of the films that really exceeded my expectations. I love heist films, and this one was a great written heist film since Ocean’s 11. Once you get used to the Southern culture and dialogue, you can appreciate the real good story it brings. You get great acting by Channing Tatum (can’t believe I said that), Adam Driver, but the most impressive acting was from Daniel Craig. It was funny with great twists that makes this a unique film to watch.
7)
Detroit (Real Rating 4.5 Stars)
I am quite surprised how there isn’t much more discussion about this movie. It deals with race relations with police in the the 60’s during the 12th Street Riot. This film was intense and really makes you think about how things haven’t really changed from then till now. I give a lot of credit to director Kathryn Bigelow for making such an intense thought provoking film. The acting was also spot on superb. So if you haven’t seen this film, do yourself a favor and watch it.
6)
War for the Planet of the Apes (Real Rating 4.5 Stars)
Let me start by saying this is the weakest one out of a great trilogy. However, it is still a pretty good spectacle to watch. The biggest thing is seeing Caesar undermining his leadership values and go against a The Colonel. Woody Harrelson played a great villain. What I really enjoyed about this film is that it is a good end for this great trilogy, and a proper send of to Andy Serkis’ motion capturing acting of Caesar. It was quite emotional, and hearing the line, “Apes Together Strong,” will always be remembered in film lore.
5)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Real Rating 4.5 Stars)
This movie continued where it left off from the first movie, and was still hilarious, awesome, and fun to watch. Only this time, it had a really good villain with Kurt Russell as Ego, also Star-Lord’s father. Baby Groot also stole the show with its cuteness. What really got to me was the emotional send off of Yondu that really made this movie great.
4)
Wonder Woman (Real Rating 4.5 Stars)
You know it was a great year for Comic Book movies where even the DC Extended Universe put out a great film. Wonder Woman really exceeded my expectations with a great story and character development, and some great action. That No Man’s Land battle scene should be up there in some of the greatest comic book action scenes. With Director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot playing the titular heroine, it is ground breaking on seeing woman making a name for themselves in Hollywood, and making an impactful film for all of us to enjoy.
3)
Kong: Skull Island (Real Rating: 4.5 Stars)
This is one of the films where I was very, very skeptical of. I didn’t think we need another film about King Kong. With that said, this really blew all my skepticism away and really, really exceeded my expectations. The action was some of the best I’ve seen with a lot of detail. I give a lot of props to director Jordan Vogt-Roberts for making an action masterpiece. This also spring boards another cinematic universe called the MonsterVerse. It really has me looking forward to seeing King Kong and Godzilla duke it out in the near future.
2)
Coco (Real Rating: 4.5 Stars)
This film really hits close to home with me. With an all Latino voice cast, and a story that really represents Latino culture, it really made me as a Latino proud. The animation was superb, and a great and somewhat grounded story really shows that when it comes to original ideas, Pixar really knows how to create a unique experience. I’m proud for the Oscars wins they have received. The song, “Remember Me,” is special, and that scene where Miguel sings to his great grandmother Coco for her to remember, really put tears in my eyes. A movie that makes me cry deserves to be in my Top 10.
1)
The Lego Batman Movie (Real Rating: 4.5 Stars)
People may be surprised with my pick for number 1 in 2017. However, if you all really know me, should know that this film had everything I enjoy in watching a great film. It deals with comic book characters with Batman and also pays tribute to other characters in film lore, it had great comedy that the whole family can enjoy, good animation once you get through the stop motion type of animation, and a good and thought provoking story about unity and working together to do good. From start to finish, I loved this movie. Seeing it with family really makes this special because it is appropriate for everybody to enjoy. To me that makes the perfect film to watch.
All right everyone. Here is my Top 10 of 2017. Agree or disagree, please feel free to comment. My Long Overdue Worse Films of 2017 will come soon. Until then, thank you and will see you there!!!
