It is time for The Real Awards of 2017 hosted by me Hans Martin Jr. your Real Movie Critic. The Year of 2017 was a pretty good year for movies, and I really do believe some deserving movies for these awards didn’t get an award where other years they could’ve. Just remember all these awards are my opinion, and whether you agree or disagree, feel free to comment on any of my social media. Now let’s say the cliched saying, “And without further ado,” lets get on with the awards.
Funniest Movie of the Year
I never thought I would see a Thor movie that was hilarious. I expected it to be overly dramatic but enjoyable. However, I give credit to director Taika Waititi for putting together a great and hilarious movie from beginning to end. There were moments where I was laughing out loud at some of the craziness it provides. It was also very entertaining with a story and action. Keep up the good work Marvel.
Best Animated Movie of the Year
No disrespect to Coco, but this belongs to The Lego Batman Movie. To me this was not only a fun film with plenty of satire on the character of Batman, but it is also a good family movie for everybody from kids to adults to watch without getting bored or traumatized. The voice casting was great. It also had some great taste in humor that everybody could laugh to as well. Great and fun movie is really all I can say to this, and at least I’m the award show that will give these Lego movies some love.
Best Nerd/Fanboy Movie of the Year
That belongs once again to The Lego Batman Movie. No disrespect to Wonder Woman which was also great, but this Lego movie also involves a huge comic book character. To all the fans of Batman who hasn’t seen this, I can assure you they do give the character justice, and they did their research to make a great story. It is also a lot of fun and very entertaining to soothe the harshest critic of Batman fanboys.
Best Romantic Movie of the Year
My least favorite award, but this year is a good one. The Big Sick is a very unique take on a love story. I give credit to Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily V. Gordon for writing a true story of their own love lives, and how tragedy can bring people even closer together. It is a pretty good romantic comedy all around.
Best Action Movie of the Year
I have to give to Kong: Skull Island. Probably this year’s best CGI special effects. It had some great action, a pretty decent story, and some good acting. I mean seeing king Kong fighting the island’s monsters is so much fun to watch with epic written all over it.
Best Oscar Nominated Movie of the Year
I have to admit, this year when it comes to Oscar nominated movies they have been pretty weak. With that said, this one really stands out. It had some great acting with Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, and directed by Stephen Spielberg. With a great story about newspaper reporters putting their jobs on the line to print out the truth in The Pentagon Papers. Who knew Spielberg could make a movie about journalism thrilling.
Movie that Exceeded My Expectations of the Year
That goes to Kong: Skull Island once again. This film I was very skeptical before watching. I didn’t want to see another King Kong movie. But with the great CGI special effects, story, and acting, it turned to be a very fun and epically entertaining flick. Now I’m looking forward to seeing the future films of the MonstersVerse universe, and seeing King Kong vs Godzilla.
Most Disappointing Movie of the Year
I really thought a film featuring Tom Cruise about a Mummy was going to be ok at best. Man was I wrong. It turned out to be the worst of this year. It does look like Cruise was phoning it in, the story was just stupid, the action was subpar, and there really was no good cohesiveness of the characters whatsoever. This was to supposedly start the Dark Cinematic Universe, but right now they’re off to a terrible start that makes the DC Extended Universe look decent.
Movie That Everybody Liked, but I Didn’t
Honestly this movie was ok at best. I did enjoy the first film, but I found this one to be exhaustingly long, the sci-fi was too much, the neo noirness was overtop, and Harrison Ford and Jared Leto were barely there in a three hour film. Yes it has good cinematography and set pieces, but it was just a little too boring for my liking.
Movie Everybody Hated, but I Liked
I do enjoy these films especially Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow. I thought the action was still fun to watch, the dialogue was witty, and the story was decent at best. Yes Javier Bardem as a villain was too campy, and the way it ended was too abrupt, but I was still entertained. I do enjoy the Pirates films for what its worth.
Weirdest Movie of the Year
Yes this film is weird. Especially when the story is an allegory that I really didn’t comprehend when watching this. Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence couldn’t tone down the weirdness. It just seems everything is escalating to the worst case scenario, and you really don’t know why. Once I figured out what director Darren Aronofsky was trying to say, it really made me hate this movie even more. Tired of atheists trying to force their views on us.
Creepiest Movie of the Year
It is creepy because of the acting of Bill Skarsgard portrayal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Every scene he is in raises my creepiness meter. I mean when those teeth come out it really did it for me. With that said, it is a rare horror movie with a very good story.
Movie I Refused to Watch this Year
I hate sharks, I hate them, I HATE them. After reading the story of this one, I don’t think i miss much anyways.
Movie of the Year with The Best Soundtrack
No disrespect to Baby Driver and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but originality always reign supreme. I’m not a fan of musicals, but I really enjoyed the music and performances in this movie about the circus getting started. The song “This is Me” is a very powerful song that really hits close to home. Fun and entertaining is this musical.
Movie With the best Quote of the Year
I didn’t like this movie, but I do give credit to Gary Oldman portraying Winston Churchill. Especially that line he gives when arguing with his generals saying, “Will you stop interrupting while I’m interrupting you!” It was funny, appropriate, and really goes with the character in this film.
Movie that Made Me Cry
That scene in Coco when the kid starting singing “Remember Me” to his great grandmother to make her remember her father was just so emotional for me. Tears started to be shed for me, and that is rare. It just shows how good of a story this Pixar film really brings.
Movie with the WTHeck Moment
I love Michael Fassbender playing the role of two androids, he was terrific. However, what is up with the scene with playing the recorder and actually kissing himself. That had me saying, “What the heck is going on here,” I just didn’t get that part whatsoever. It was just weird.
All right everyone, thanks for reading my Real Awards of 2017. There is a full ranking of all the films of 2017 below, so be sure to check it out.
