The House with a Clock in Its Walls is something we all have seen before, but the strong acting by Jack Black and Cate Blanchett somewhat made it watchable!!!
Rating: 3.5 Stars
What I Like:
-The acting of Jack Black and Cate Blanchett really made this movie watchable, you get what you expect from Black, but seeing Blanchett in a comedy/horror role was interesting and fun, I enjoyed hearing both Black and Blanchett batner throughout the movie
-Eli Roth who is known for making bloody disgusting horror movies actually directed a PG movie, I did enjoy the creepiness he brings at the beginning, and the decent CGI action he brings in the end
The So So:
-The story reminds me of past movies, most notably Goosebumps for the tone of horror for kids, and it also reminds me of Harry Potter dealing with a kid learning magic only with a more dark undertone, with that said, I still find the story entertaining enough even though it is not my cup of tea in the type of story
What I Didn’t Like:
-I really question if this movie really is for kids because it does deal with occult things and it can be too creepy and scary for some kids (especially if you watch it in IMAX with Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video in 3D preceding it)
-The child acting is as bad as child acting gets
Overall:
It is entertaining enough especially when you’re into kids horror. Story is decent enough, but it is something we have seen before. I do question the validity of the rating for kids to watch, because I believe it is too dark. With all that said, to see Jack Black and Cate Blanchett at their finest, is fun to watch!!!

(Sidenote: The Rider- It is a well put together drama film about a rodeo rider from South Dakota who got into a terrible accident but wants to recover and ride again against all odds. It features non actors that actually acted pretty well. Only thing is that it can be very boring at times and drag along. However, if you’re into horses and horse training, this is the movie for you!!!
