Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle takes on a darker tone of this well known story, but being dark without real substance can be a drag!!!
Rating: 3 Stars
What I Like:
-The cinematography in this film is fascinating, seeing the jungle unraveling before your eyes was awesome and I give kudos to director Andy Serkis for that
-The voice acting of the different animals was great as well. especially Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Kahn where he was intense in almost every scene
The So So:
-The story had a darker tone which is really what made it different from the other versions of this classic, and (correct me if I’m wrong) more in turn with the original book. with all that said, it is dark but without any real substance, it’s violent which makes it cool, but no feeling with the darkness, the things that Mowgli is going through really didn’t create a big impact, which is unfortunate, took the sense of realism out of the picture quickly
What I Didn’t Like:
-Since it is a dark story with no substance it really was a drag, there were times where it was boring, and add to the fact it really doesn’t explain the law of the jungle very well which made it confusing to follow
-The whole part of Mowgli being human was rushed, and once again his convergence to that really lacked substance
-For a movie that took its time on the CGI, I wasn’t all that impressed, some of the animals just looked very ugly, I believe the Disney live action version was a lot better
-I’m also disappointed that one of my favorite characters, King Louie, wasn’t there, and Cate Blanchett voicing Kaa sounded really weird for my liking
I don’t think it is fair to compare the Disney live action version, because it is two different movies. The darker tone with the substance of realism made boring in the end. I do give credit for Andy Serkis’ direction, but I do believe it could’ve been a lot better. At least it is on Netflix, and you all have nothing to lose to check it out (unless you don’t have Netflix). So you all can be the judge!!!
