On the Basis of Sex does follow the biopic formula, but the great acting of Felicity Jones portraying Ruth Bader Ginsburg does give it justice!!!
Rating: 4 Stars
What I Like:
-The acting of Felicity Jones playing the Notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) really what makes this biopic a strong film to watch, I loved seeing her determination in going over any speed bump coming at her, but I also enjoyed the charming chemistry between her and her husband, played by Armie Hammer, I thought they worked well together and really shows a supportive family
The So So:
-It does have a lot of law jargon that can confuse people, but when you put it all together with sex (or gender) discrimination it will all make sense and understand how big this was during that time, and that’s when the power of this film hits you
What I Didn’t Like:
-It does follow that biopic formula, even though it had one major focus on her first case in gender (or sex) discrimination and her trial and tribulations leading up to it, but it does make it way too predictable, even for a biopic standards
Overall:
Yes it is a formulaic biopic, but its real intentions are there with a purpose. It does show how crazy it was for women back in the day, and how far we come along when it comes to equal rights to gender. What really makes this a good film is the acting of Felicity Jones who shows the fire and tenacity of RBG, and why she deserves the nickname of notorious. Yet, showing how loving and supportive she also is as well. So yes, the intentions were there a brightly showed, but making it formulaic is the difference of being a good movie to a great one!!!
