Raya and the Last Dragon may follow all the Disney tropes, but the great animation and great story of unity really makes this a fun film for the whole family to watch!!!
Real Rating: 4 Slinky Swords
What I Like:
-The animation, as usual, was on point, the scenery was beautifully made and captures the culture and history of Southeast Asia
-I really enjoyed the message about unity, settling your differences for a greater good, I believe it is a great message for the whole family
-The voice casting was great as well, Kelly Marie Tran as the protagonist, Raya was great showing courage, determination, and emotion, and Awkwafina as Sisu the dragon provided some good comic relief, I liked the fact that it was primarily voiced by an Asian cast that added authenticity and diversity
The So So:
-The story does have almost all the Disney tropes which makes it predictable, especially in the beginning, but the execution from then on really makes up for it, and you really enjoy the adventure
-It did provide some great fight scenes, but I wish it had more for me to enjoy
What I Didn’t Like:
-There was really nothing I hated, any takeaway I had, they really made up for it, but my only nitpicky thing is how is a baby that skillful and smart, but that is the best I can come up, and it does remind me a lot of the cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender storywise
Overall:
This is a fun movie for the family to enjoy. Disney is really upping the ante in making more cultural films, and I really do appreciate that. This one not only provided great animation, but a cool world building adventure, some cool fights, and a message we could all use about unity and strength. I highly recommend it for the whole family to sit down and watch, and hopefully inspire!!!
