Mortal Kombat (Sidenote: Willy’s Wonderland)

Mortal Kombat (2021 film).png

Mortal Kombat was an upgrade on action, fights, and well needed gore, but the story still lagged any type of sense whatsoever!!!

Real Rating: 3 Arcanas

What I Like:

-The fights and action scenes were fun to see, it is not a Mortal Kombat movie without blood and gore and you get a lot of that for sure, but I really enjoyed the choreography of the fights especially the fights in the beginning and the final fight, those were my favorite ones for sure, the fights really made this film fun to watch at the very least
-Some of the characters I really enjoyed, I liked Sub-Zero as a villain who was definitely terrifying, but my biggest surprise was Kano, Josh Lawson really encapsulates his character very well, he was also hilarious with his jokes and showing a true personality of how Kano suppose to be

The So So:

-The acting was a little subpar, but it wasn’t so terrible that it was unbearable, there was some awkward chemistry issues which can seem cringy
-There were some good development with some characters, and some characters development were nonexistent, I know for a film with a lot of characters can be hard to develop everybody well, but at least give them some purpose at least
-The remix of the classic Mortal Kombat song is different, but not sure if I like it, it might be too much, but it is in today’s music standards which is not good in my book, but I don’t hate it

What I Didn’t Like:

-The story did not make any sense whatsoever, it seems like where they focus too much on wasn’t worthwhile, and the good parts where just rushed, to me it lingered on the wrong places, and lost it focus, and that’s unfortunate
-Without spoiling it, the whole story of Cole just seemed unnecessary to me, and I will leave it at that
-I hated how they treated one of my favorite characters, Kabal, in this, first off, he looks like a rejected character from the Snyder Cut, and his character really has no purpose, just a fighter with attitude, I can say the same for Mileena and Goro as well, very underdeveloped, and Shang Tsung was not intimidating whatsoever, and that is disappointing greatly, the villains really were underdeveloped here

Overall:

I did not hate this movie. First off, I like the first Mortal Kombat movie, even though the CGI and special effects didn’t age well. With that said, the story was still a lot better than this new film. It just didn’t make sense to me. I am a fan of the video game franchise, and I am familiar with the story, but their focus wasn’t right in this. Let alone how some of their characters were way too underdeveloped. What really worked was the fights, the special effects, the choreography, and yes the blood and gore was a welcome sight for this. It does set up for a sequel, but if that gets greenlit, I hope they can come up with a better story. I know it is hard to make a really good movie with so many beloved characters, but there has to be some try in this. If not, it is finished before I can even say, “Finish Him!!!”

(Sidenote: Willy’s Wonderland – You want Nic Cage being BA without saying a single word, yet still being Nic Cage? This is your movie. This does follow your the typical horror movie tropes, but the outrageousness it brings, kind of makes it fun. I mean, who doesn’t want to see Nic Cage beating up evil animatronics?
Real Rating: 3.5 Animatronics)
