Project Power

Project Power poster.jpeg

Project Power had an interesting premise and good acting, but it seems to forget to have an effective story!!!

Real Rating: 3 Animal Powers

What I Like:

-The acting by both Jaime Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were pretty good, I enjoyed their characters very well

The So So:

-The premise of this film is very interesting and unique, but unfortunately the execution wasn’t effective enough, it should’ve been something great, but in the end it is just a typical drug and action film
-The action had some cool moments, especially seeing the super powers the people get, but there was a lot of shaky cam and fast editing that was very distracting

What I Didn’t Like:

-They had some subplots that really could’ve made this movie a lot more effective, but in the end, not effective, not something that we can relate to, just a mindless action flick

Overall:

This film had a lot of potential, especially with its premise and actors. Unfortunately it was a typical film with some decent action, but nothing effective to make this film really good. Some wasted opportunities to make it relatable, but it failed in that regard. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is!!!

The One and Only Ivan

The One and Only Ivan Poster.jpg

The One and Only Ivan is a great family movie, but I can’t help but shake the belief that this film was made by PETA!!!

Real Rating: 3.5 Gorillas

What I Like:

-The voice acting was great, especially Sam Rockwell as Ivan and his relationship with the stray dog, Bob, voiced by Danny DeVito, their friendship looks genuine, and Ivan’s influence with the other animals
-As far as the real life actors, Bryan Cranston was really good as well as pretty much the ringmaster of his show, it does show a real human side of him and the stress of his business that brings a great reality to this film
-I have to say, the CGI animation was on point for the animals, they definitely looked real, and the cinematography of this film was great as well

The So So:

-I get the main message for the kids and families that watch this film, but the third act felt like it came straight from PETA, an organization that annoys me from time to time with their methods, I know it is not fair, but I can’t shake the feeling that PETA’s hands was around this

What I Didn’t Like:

-Can a story be very simple, for kids movies, yes, but for a family movie, it definitely needs more depth to make it effective
-Also the tone of the film did fell uneven and familiar, reminded me of Dumbo and Free Willy at times, and can’t pick of it wanted to be a movie with a message or just entertainment

Overall:

It is a fine movie for your young kids. Reminded me of a time when I was young and use to watch Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and Free Willy. With that said, that is the main problem it is all too familiar. You can enjoy it but it won’t be as effective, especially when you get PETA vibes like me. Regardless, its a fine movie, and that is something you can’t take away from it!!!

The Tax Collector

The Tax Collector.jpg

The Tax Collector is a typical gangster movie we all have seen, at least it was engaging enough for me to care!!!

Real Rating: 2.5 Chocolate Bars

What I Like:

-I do like a good old gangster film, even the bad ones, this film did have my attention from beginning to end especially dealing with Mexican gangs in South Central LA

The So So:

-The acting was a mix bag some were good like the protagonist Bobby Soto and Jimmy Smits, some were bad like the main antagonist, Jose “Conejo” Martin, and some that were laughable because I can’t take them seriously as gangsters like Shia Lebouf (more on him later) and George Lopez, I love you George Lopez, but being a gangster is not one of your good things

What I Didn’t Like:

-The movie is a formulaic gangster movie, where they have to deal with rivals and tragedy, and the characters are the typical characters for this kind of movie, I practically predicted what’s going to happen until the end
-I still don’t understand why Shia Lebouf was casted for this movie was the enforcer, his acting was laughable, but at the same time, I was offended because they could’ve casted another actor with Latino origins to play his character instead of whitewashing it with Lebouf, and what’s the point of Lebouf getting a real chest tattoo for his role when you barely see it, so many wrongs with this character

Overall:

It does have its formulaic flaws, and other issues (Shia Lebouf). With all that said, it was still engaging to see how this story went down. I just wish there was something more inspiring for these characters instead of seeing the same old thing!!!

Archive

Archive (film).jpg

Archive may have the boring sci fi talk, but in the end it is a film that makes you think!!!

Real Rating: 3.5 Black and White Cartoons

What I Like:

-Without giving too much, the twist at the end, really made me think, it is an effective twist

The So So:

-Pretty much two thirds of the film is just pure robot technology talk which got very boring for me, with all that said, I understand some people like that kind of stuff, it is a sci fi flick after all, and it does it job, just not my type of ordeal
-I have mixed feelings on having the robots with too much emotional intelligence, one one side it is a more advanced robot which gives it a new angle, even though it is something we have seen before, but it got annoying because it feels like these robots are going through an emo phase and very overdramatic

What I Didn’t Like:

-I just think this film could have been more powerful with a more effective storyline and maybe better ramifications for what the main character, George played by Theo James, is doing it just didn’t bring my full attention as it should

Overall:

Yes, it is very flat for me most of the time, but I know people who are into robots and technology will be fascinated by it. Don’t expect any Tony Stark technology type of astonishment. It is very grounded with a good touch of sci fi stuff. After all of that, the twist at the end does make me think, and I am interested to see what the other people have to say about that!!!

Color Out of Space

Color Out of Space (2019) poster.jpg

Color Out of Space is weird, but it is a beautiful weirdness!!!

Real Rating: 3.5 Alpacas

What I Like:

-The cinematography is spectacular, the way director Richard Stanley mixes the color purple in the scenes is great, and it knows when to look spooky and when to look beautiful

The So So:

-The story is pretty straight forward, something happens and things just get weirder and more dangerous, plotwise is nothing great, but at the very lest, it is easy to follow
-Nicolas Cage’s eccentric acting, you will either love it or hate it, as for me it made me laugh which is probably not the movie’s intention

What I Didn’t Like:

-It did end on a tragic note, not to give too much away, but the way the characters of the family were developed, you expected something a good conclusion for the family, instead it just gets weirder and weirder

Overall:

Does the film has its flaws, yes, but if you watch it for what it is, you may be entertained. It is a sci fi in a very weird fashion. With all that said, the cinematography that mixes the color of purple really made this a beautiful spectacle. Yes, Niclas Cage is in it, but don’t worry about him. Just watch how things unravel!!!

Real Rating: 3.5 Alpacas

Greyhound

Greyhound poster.jpeg

Greyhound doesn’t give anything spectacular, but the grounded action is thrilling to watch!!!

Real Rating: 3.5 Non Eaten Lunch Trays

What I Like:

-For Tom Hanks he acted very well which is expected, but the fact that he wrote the screenplay I am impressed, I know writing a story like that is not easy, and Hanks really did well with all the details it entails
-The film is 90 minutes, and that was perfect, it got to the point of the story, and you just sit back and watch how it all unfolds

The So So:

The action wasn’t anything spectacular, no type of Michael Bay, Roland Emmerich, or even Antoine Fuqua, it is a grounded World War II naval war movie, it brought a sense of realism to what is really like during that aspect of this war, and I appreciate that, with that said, it can make it boring at times

What I Didn’t Like:

-The film is pretty much the point of view by the commanding officer, which is fine, but it does sacrifice the character development of everybody else, and there was a lot of naval jargon which can get redundant and flat for a movie, they might as well got rid of the beginning part of the commanding officer and his love interest, and just get on with the battles

Overall:

It’s a good grounded historical naval war movie, but don’t expect anything spectacular that you may be use to. Though the groundedness in its action and the tense moments does make it good to watch. Tom Hanks really does what he does best, and you can just appreciate taking on a role of leadership in this film, and see how it goes down in history!!!

Palm Springs

Palm Springs poster.jpeg

Palm Springs does bring a unique way of involving a rom com with sci fi, sort of, Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti really made it work somehow!!!

Real Rating: 3.5 Wake Ups

What I Like:

-Cristin Milioti and surprisingly Andy Samberg really made this story work, their development and their ideologies of life in general really made it interesting to watch, Samberg is still goofy and what not, but in his serious parts, I thought he did real well, and show great chemistry with Milioti, and made the whole ordeal genuine
-The theme of how you view life, and how different it can be from one person to another is fascinating to watch, and how you approach with things like being stuck in a time loop, shows your true character, that can be inspirational for people

The So So:

-The story is definitely something we have seen before, with that said, the different angles they put on it does have a unique twist that works, it does make it fun to see what will happen next

What I Didn’t Like:

-Even though this is a rom com, I didn’t feel the love is merited, and maybe because it is rushed in the end, but I felt it might of been forced too abruptly
-Yes dealing with time jumps or time in general can lead to plotholes and loopholes, and this one is no different, even then it is minor, but hard for me to shake off, so maybe it’s just me

Overall:

Yes this film has some minor flaws, but it is still a fascinating story to see. It may tickle your soul on how you view life, and that could be a great thing. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti really made this story work in the end. Watch it with an open mind, and you may get something that can make you think!!!

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Eurovision Song Contest- The Story of Fire Saga poster.jpg

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga may appease to fans who love this kind of thing, but the typical humor from Will Ferrell can get old real quick!!!

Real Rating: 3 Elves

What I Like:

-The charm between Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams was nice to see

The So So:

-It is not my cup of tea, but for fans of these type of singing shows will most likely love it, it does bring great moments like some of the performances and the sing off in the party were great, but for me it was whatever, it’s not my type of thing
-Some of the comedy was hit and miss, but the scenes with the Americans actually made me laugh

What I Didn’t Like:

-This is a typical Will Ferrell type of humor which can be a good thing or a bad thing, in this case, it was a bad thing because seeing Ferrell a inconsiderate jerk most of the times really doesn’t bode well for him, let alone that some of the jokes were not really funny
-A thin story doesn’t help much either, it just loses its effectiveness

Overall:

It is a typical Will Ferrell comedy, but this time around it is more on the obnoxious side of things which doesn’t work right. The hot and miss comedy and thin story did not help at all. With all that said, the musical performance which is the main point of this film, really does flourish. Fans of these type of contests would really enjoy this for sure. As for me, it wasn’t really my thing, but for those that do like it, more power to you!!!

The Old Guard

The Old Guard 2020 film poster.png

The Old Guard turns a comic book movie to a very grounded and gritty which makes a good story and decent action!!!

Real Rating: 4 Bone Breaks

What I Like:

-The story was great, it made a comic book story from fantastical to very gritty and grounded, I give it credit for making characters with immortal powers very emotional and and making their power not as great as it sounds on paper
-The acting of these immortal warriors were great with their character development, especially Charlize Theron as the leader of the group, I swear, when she is in great action movies, she excels, and want to see more of that

The So So:

-The action was decent, I loved hearing the bone crunching in the fights, and the Bourne movies style of  of choreography and cinematography, but it wasn’t any action that blew my mind, not that is a bad thing, cuz the story definitely makes up for it

What I Didn’t Like:

-As great the story is, the minor twists were predictable, but not effective enough to bring the movie down

Overall:

I enjoyed this comic book film but not for the action, which was decent, but the grounded story really made this a good watch. Charlize Theron and the rest of the gang provided great characters for us to care for in the execution of their character development. It is fun, enjoyable, and thrilling enough to enjoy a Netflix movie night or Party with this one!!!

John Henry

JohnHenryPoster.jpeg

John Henry is horrible in acting, writing, and direction, ironically, I wasn’t bored!!!

Real Rating: 2 Sledgehammers

What I Like:

-The only thing I give credit for is that it wasn’t boring

The So So:

-It is definitely not its intention, but I found it hilarious, even on the serious parts with how bad the execution and acting, it is up there with hilariously bad movies like The Room

What I Didn’t Like:

-What can I say, everything is bad with this, the acting seemed phoned in, the direction seemed like the budget was very, very low, and the writing was way too predictable, I’m surprised that Terry Crews took this role, heck it is even too low for Chris “Ludacris” Bridges standards
-I was hoping for some great gory action involving sledgehammers, but I didn’t even get that, everything violent act was played off screen which is greatly disappointing
-They could’ve had a good message about immigration, but it just runs way too thin in that aspect

Overall:

This was just a terrible movie, and not sure why Netflix even bothered for this film to be produced. I’m surprised Terry Crews and Ludacris took these roles. I’m surprised this story was even written outside of high school students. With all that said, I was just entertained and laughing in how bad this film is. It is up in the status of The Room of hilariously bad films. So I give it credit for not making it boring, but not for the reasons they want it to be!!!

Real Rating: 2 Sledgehammers
