The Marvels

The Marvels is not perfect for Marvel Cinematic Universe standards, but it is still a fun and enjoyable film!!!

Real Rating:

3.5 Regurgitating Cats

What I Like:

-This film was very light hearted and fun, it was boring, not even for a minute, the whole using your power and switching off things was fun to see
-The acting was great as well, most notably for me was Iman Vellani as Kamala Kahn or Ms. Marvel, her teenage vibe and realizing her role as a superhero with her family accepting her for who she is, is such great character development

The So So:

-After the first Captain Marvel, it was definitely a big tonal shift for this film, to me it can be a good thing, where it is not heavy handed on certain themes, and show how powerful she can be, but also lost the seriousness of a cosmic superhero with all the stakes, it even made a post Secret Invasion Nick Fury a little too light hearted for my liking
-Dar-Benn may seem like a typical old villain we have seen already, but her reasonings can be relatable to her obsession with certain things, but it didn’t seem the stakes were too high for us to be intimidated by this villain
-This film may have showed what we can expect in the future of the MCU, with some exciting stuff, but I still didn’t feel hyped with the whole Multiverse Saga, at least not yet

What I Didn’t Like:

-I felt the story was rushed, it is like it goes from one thing to another with its lack of transitions or some time for us to think, it just immediately goes quick before we can think on what just happened
-The new characters introduced in this film barely had any screen time for us to care

Overall:

For Marvel Cinematic Universe standards, it is not one of the greats. With that said, it is still a fun film for us to sit back and enjoy. The light heartedness of it all can be a breathe of fresh air, and not be taken too seriously which can be bad thing too. Regardless, Kamala Kahn has become one of my favorite characters recently, and I’m looking forward to see what the MCU has in store for her. As for this Multiverse Saga, though there are some things to get excited about, I’m still not as hyped for it. At least not yet!!!

The Holdovers

The Holdovers may be a typical coming of age film of sorts, but it has the strongest acting I’ve seen so far!!!

Real Rating:

4 Boarding Schools

What I Like:

-The acting is the strongest point of this film, Paul Giamatti was great, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph was sensational, even Dominic Sessa showed some true potential
-I also liked the old school feel that director Alexander Payne executed on this, it gave a different vibe, even showing how Boston looked in 1970

The So So:

-This was a coming of age movie of sorts, not just for the student, but for the teacher and cook as well, it can be predictable and slow at times, but when events go down, it was enjoyable to watch, the fact that this happened in a span of two weeks was interesting enough to see

What I Didn’t Like:

-How it all ended seemed too rash for my liking, yes I can understand for the sake of the story, but I felt it ended on a bleak note

Overall:

It can be a feel good, coming of age, Christmas movie per say. However the character depth and strong acting really gave this film some substance for us to understand and enjoy. The vibe and setting really brings out a different feeling than usual. Yes it may ended a little bleak, but overall it was an enjoyable watch!!!
