The Age of Adaline has an interesting story to begin with, but in the end it got too predictable and corny.

I guess one of the reasons that I wanted to watch this movie is that the story of someone not aging intrigues me. I’m just curious why with this kind of power can be a bad thing, or maybe for some people a curse, and where this story goes and ends. You see it in the movies involving Hugh Jackman’s character of Wolverine as he struggles with this gift or curse sometimes to a point where he wants to be mortal. I guess when you live with it for a long time it can take a toll on you, but I wouldn’t mind having that power if it was bestowed on me. i would make the best of it.
What I Like: The story of this movie was interesting yet simple for people to comprehend. About a women named Adaline Bowman, played by Blake Lively, who at the age of 29, got into an accident where she was fibrillated by lightning that gave her the power of not aging past 29. She had to endure this power for 107 years. During those years she had to move on every ten years and change her identity because she didn’t want to be a part of human experimentation where people review her strange power. She moves on to keep safe, and from time to time she spends time with her now elderly daughter, Flemming Prescott played by Ellen Burstyn, and because she moves around a lot, she decides not to get romantically involved with another guy since her late husband. During her journey of today she meets a wealthy philanthropist named Ellis Jones, played by Michiel Huisman, who really tries hard (or stalked depending how you see it) to ask her out, but Adaline keeps brushing him off until she finally relents. During their dates, she starts to fall in love with him, and with the blessing from her daughter, decides to get serious. Serious to a point where she meets Ellis’ family and meets William Jones, played by Harrison Ford, who immediately recognize her as Adaline whom they used to date in the 60’s until she stood him up when he was going to propose to her. Of course Adaline plays it off explaining that is her mother, and during their time together, William talks great things about Adaline as the girl that got away. One day, William notices the scar on her hand and realizes she is Adaline and confronts her about it which makes her runaway once again. During this whole story I thought the acting by Blake Lively was great for her role, but what really impressed me was Harrison Ford acting with a lot of emotion and heart which really impressed me, cuz I didn’t know he still had that in him.
The So So: The movie really tries to add a scientific approach to this story which I started to appreciate at first into giving an sci-fi explanation on how she received her power. However, whe they started talking about this comet that William is trying to find again to prove his theory, I thought it was too much and stupid. If they try to make that symbolically, it really didn’t capture me, and I love symbolism.
What I Didn’t Like: As the story really reached it’s climax, I practically got how this movie will play out. I knew that she will end up with Ellis which makes it another corny love story. I also knew that somehow Adaline will lose her power. I just hoped it didn’t take another accident for her to lose, but low and behold that’s what practically what happened. Only a defibrillator revived her and made her normal. It just created that happy moment for Adaline for a happily ever after ending which was just straight up boring for me.
Overall, The story was intriguing which made the movie watchable. It’s just too bad that predictability, cliches, and corniness brought down to an average out of the mill movie. It happens!!!
